Siena Il Palio 9 Days

Radicondoli / Siena   •   June 25 – July 3 2017

TOUR ITINERARY  { 9 days / 8 nights }

Sunday June 25, 2017

Upon arrival in the hilltop hamlet of Radicondoli, you will check in to your deluxe apartments.  To welcome you to Tuscany, we will enjoy an Italian aperitivo at Bottega Pacini and then a wine tasting with a local sommelier.  At 8PM, you will behold the spectacular splendor of the Feast of San Giovanni in the town's main square — dining al fresco.

Monday June 26, 2017

Enjoy breakfast on your own.  At 10.30, we will depart for the town of Lajatico.  Perched on a hill overlooking a green valley, Lajatico is home to winding stone streets and sweeping views of Tuscany. You will wander the historic town.  In the early afternoon, you will enjoy a wine tasting at Andrea Bocelli's countryside farm — including bottles produced by Sting's personal Italian wine maker.  We will return to Radicondoli in the mid-afternoon. Explore the town on your own or relax before dinner.  At 8PM, we will enjoy an authentic Tuscan feast at Agriteca — a traditional trattoria in the main square.

Tuesday June 27, 2017

After enjoying breakfast at your accommodation, we will depart for the Tuscan countryside. Today, you will visit the magnificent estate of a noble family, Villa Anqua.  In the magnificent stone barn of the property, you will enjoy a hands-on cooking lesson with the owners, Andrea and Giovanni. Today, you will savor the smells and flavors of seasonal Tuscan cuisine — enjoyed in a scenic country setting.

Following your adventure in Tuscan cuisine, we will return to Radicondoli for some time at leisure.  At 6.30 PM, you will depart for San Galgano.  The town of San Galgano is famed for the abandoned ruins of a medieval abbey.  As we pass through the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, you will watch the sun begin to set over the vineyards and rustic farms.  For dinner, we will enjoy a Tuscan banquet — picn style — from atop a hill.  The countryside will be painted in gold and orange light, as you enjoy your sunset meal outdoors.

Wednesday June 28, 2017

Enjoy breakfast on your own at the accommodation. In the mid morning, we will depart for the surrounding countryside. Here, we will visit the home of a local shepherd and observe how pecorino toscano cheese is made and aged.  You will see the whole process of cheese-making, from the milking of the sheep to the aging of the pecorino wheels. Following your behind-the-scenes tour, we will enjoy a traditional lunch in the company of the shepherd. You will then have the afternoon at leisure in Radicondoli.

For dinner, you will learn to make your own Italian-style pizza — turning flour and water into a wood-fired delicacy. In addition to learning how to make pizza, you will hear the history of this most Italian of dishes.  Following your pizza-making adventure in the kitchen, you will dine al fresco on a terrace overlooking the Tuscan valley below.

Thursday June 29, 2017

After breakfasting at your accommodation, we will explore the sculpture gardens of Manfredo Deva. The gardens of this world-famous artist are spread across 10 hectares of Tuscan countryside, marrying pristine nature with stone carvings.  We will then enjoy local specialties for lunch at a nearby trattoria in the countryside.  Your afternoon is at leisure in Radicondoli.

Prepare to be awed this evening.  For dinner, we will return to Anqua — savoring a true taste of Tuscany, as we dine in the open-air gardens of a country villa.  Here, you will sip Chianti under the stars — surrounded by the unparalleled beauty of the Tuscan landscape.

Friday June 30, 2017

Today, we will depart for Colle di Val d’Elsa. After strolling the meandering cobblestone streets of the city, we will explore the open-air market with a local guide.  This fortified city overlooks the surrounding valley. Here you will encounter a Tuscany minus the masses.  At lunch, we will dine at Sbarbacipolla — enjoying the garden-fresh bounty of summer.

Following our visit to Colle di Val d'Elsa, we will head to the medieval jewel of San Gimignano. Famed for the imposing stone towers that rise from the city's historic center, San Gimignano stands guard atop a hill.  Here, you will enjoy a hands-on gelato class — learning the secrets behind Italy's favorite sweet.

In the evening, you will enjoy dinner in the company of locals at an authentic ristorante in Radicondoli.

Saturday July 1, 2017

This morning, you will check out of your accommodation and head to the Renaissance gem of Siena. In Siena, you will overnight in deluxe apartments in the city's historic center. To welcome you to Siena, we will enjoy an introductory guided walk through the city's core — including lunch in a local eatery and a visit to the crypt of the Duomo.  Siena is alive with pageantry in early July due to the annual Palio — a historic horse race in the main square of Siena.

At 7PM, we will observe the trial run of the horse race in the Piazza del Campo — awed by the colors, the thrills and splendor of this tradition.  Following our viewing, we will head to one of Siena's main quarters to enjoy an open-air feast.  Each neighborhood that runs in the race hosts an outdoor feast in honor of the Palio. Dine under the stars at this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Sunday July 2, 2017

In the morning, you will observe one of the Palio's most sacred traditions — the benediction mass in Piazza del Campo.  Before taking in the spectacle of the Palio in the afternoon, you will enjoy a guided visit to Siena's museums and lunch at a traditional Tuscan trattoria.

Following your lunch, you will watch the blessing of the horses — a time-honored tradition that occurs prior to the race.  From here, we will head to our exclusive piazza-facing palace.  You will enjoy the Palio of Siena from above — in the comfort of a noble family's regal home.  In addition to beholding the spectacular race below, you will enjoy local wine and traditional Tuscan antipasti.

Dinner will be held at the Osteria Le Logge, offering a stunning view of the city's medieval bell tower.
